Open Air Nursery
Tarnerland Nursery School provides care and education for children from 3 months to 5 years old. The school has been on this site for almost 100 years, opening as an 'open air nursery' in 1933. We are extremely lucky to still have our large garden, 'the meadow', shaded by many mature trees and full of play and learning opportunities for the children. Our three groups take it in turns to use the meadow throughout the day and this is also where our Forest School sessions take place.
Lookers and Explorers
Our 'Lookers and Explorers' (babies) use the Meadow Room, a light and spacious building constructed in 2015. This provides an idyllic environment for up to 18 babies with dedicated spaces for sleeping, dining and changing. The room is surrounded by decking with the largest decked area overlooking the meadow and with a view of the sea on the horizon.
Players and Pretenders
The 2-3 year olds, our 'Players and Pretenders' have use of a downstairs room and a large upstairs space consisting of two adjoining areas and an outdoor decked area. Downstairs is where the children arrive and depart from and is the space used for their group sleep in the middle of the day. Upstairs is solely dedicated to play, with various zones in use - messy play, role-play, construction, quiet play, reading area, etc.
Carers and Creators
The oldest and largest group of children, our 'Carers and Creators' use the majority of the ground floor of the main building. They are organised into two bases (blue butterflies and orange squirrels) but enjoy free-flow between all areas, including the playground, for much of the day. Both groups have their own separate space for direct teaching sessions with their keyperson which take place at regular intervals.
